Can biofuels be sustainable?
About the video: ‘Can biofuels be sustainable?’
Dr Brown explains that higher oil prices mean biofuels are now economically competitive. The sector is seeing huge growth as a result. But as more food crops are transformed into fuel, the prices of staple foods such as grain may well rise. This could trigger serious economic repercussions. If the world’s 800 million car users start competing for these commodities, the welfare of the 2 billion poorest people – who need cheap food to live – may be put at risk.
