About the video: ‘How can humanity better respect the environment?’

Michael Meacher MP addresses the theme of environmental governance. He begins by talking about the fragile nature of our Earth’s biosphere, with particular reference to James Lovelock’s Gaia Theory. Noting that industry is one of the largest polluting sectors, he explains how a new system of legislation is needed to hold large corporations accountable for environmental crimes. He closes by suggesting that perhaps the time has come for a World Environment Court, armed with similar powers to those of the WTO – one that has the authority to issue deterrent fines.
