About the video: ‘Can we make poverty history?’

In this short clip, produced by the 2005 Make Poverty History campaign, Nelson Mandela reminds us that it is up to all of us to continue exerting pressure on heads of state to reduce extreme poverty. Poverty in Africa and elsewhere can be alleviated through more and better aid, debt relief and fairer trade. However, without the appropriate political will very little can be achieved.

About Nelson Mandela

From 1948, when apartheid first came into force, Nelson Mandela publicly opposed South Africa’s white minority government and its policy of racial separation. He was imprisoned in 1964 and freed twenty seven years later by F.W de Klerk. In 1994, Mandela was elected President of South Africa. The Nobel Peace Prize winner retired in June 1999.
