About the video: ‘What impacts has globalization had?’

John Cavanagh looks at the history of economic globalization. He believes we are emerging from a “dark age” of the 1980s and 1990s, which saw the rise of what George Soros termed ‘market fundamentalism.’ This, he believes, was a period during which world economies thrived at the expense of democracy, environment, sustainability and dignified work. Cavanagh looks at the emergence of two positive trends that could bring about much-needed sources of countervailing power to contain corporate interests. One is the rise of citizen movements in the global south, something politicians cannot ignore. The other source of hope is the recent success of progressive leaders in national elections held in Latin America and elsewhere.
