About the video: ‘How do we make industry more sustainable?’

Bill Joy believes that the necessary steps for industry are first to reduce the quantity of materials used in the manufacturing process, then to reuse and recycle them where at all possible. Generally speaking, the US is not doing well on recycling. Plastic is a problem because of the diverse forms it takes, making it uneconomical to sort. Joy speculates that advancing technologies may in due course restore cottage industries in areas such as food and fashion. This could be part of a pattern to relocalise our lives along the lines of localized food production and distribution.
