Former President of South Africa; Nobel Laureate
From 1948, when apartheid first came into force, Nelson Mandela publicly opposed South Africa's white minority government and its policy of racial separation. He was imprisoned in 1964 and freed twenty seven years later by FW de Klerk. In 1994, Mandela was elected President of South Africa. The Nobel Peace Prize winner retired in June 1999.
